Resource Services |
![]() St. George's has been a lighthouse for Resource Services in the New Orleans area as our program was the first in the city, starting in 1975. We employ 13 full-time resource specialists, the most out of any school in the area that is not a special education institution, and we pride ourselves on our ability to incorporate an eclectic group of programs into our curriculum to help our students find individual success. Resource Services exists as a part of St. George's to assist students with learning, academic or speech/language difficulties. Resource students must be able to receive their primary instruction within the regular classroom. They generally visit one of the Resource rooms in groups of two or three students, for one to five sessions weekly. A student may also be served on an indirect basis by having a Resource specialist monitor his or her progress in the regular classroom and assist in coordinating his or her program. Resource teachers work directly with students to strive to remediate deficit areas as well as to teach compensatory strategies. They also work to "enlighten" students as to their individual learning styles, to help them better understand their strengths and weaknesses and to encourage them to become self-advocates. An Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is developed for each child. Early intervention is given top priority at St. George's. Resource specialists screen children to help determine the source of classroom difficulties, make referrals for further evaluation when necessary and also arrange for evaluations through the school. Through a team effort, an effective foundation for learning is built to enable students to reach their given potential.
