Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

Revised: 5/11/2010

Computer resources and electronic services are available for St. George’s students, and their use is guided by St. George’s philosophy and mission. Student use of all St. George’s computers and technologies must be in support of education and research and must be consistent with the goals, criteria and ethics of St. George’s Episcopal School.

Privacy Statement
St. George’s network users do not have a personal privacy right in any information, data or communications, including e-mail messages, created, transmitted, received, or stored on the St. George’s network and equipment. St. George’s may access at any time any such data or information, whether or not that data or information relates to the school’s business.

Every student enrolled at St. George’s automatically receives access to the school's local area network (LAN). Private passwords for network space are allocated to all students in grades 3-8 in order to access some applications and for storage of their personal data.

St. George’s retains the right to review, edit or remove any material stored in student files on the network, which the school staff, in its sole discretion, believes may not be related to educational purposes.

Students are expected to follow the rules set forth in this AUP, and the laws in effect for the local area network. To protect the integrity of St. George's computer systems and themselves, Users agree to the following:

Hardware/Network Use Policy

I will not intentionally destroy or deface any of St. George’s computer hardware or software, including but not limited to laptops, desktops, printers, displays and wireless devices or attempt to exceed or modify the parameters of St. George's computer systems. I will be responsible for replacing any hardware or software that I damage.

I understand that it is in my own best interest to backup all important school documents in my network directory (Y drive). Flash drive backup of important material is also strongly advised.

I understand that I must keep my password confidential. I will not seek out or use another's password. Doing so may allow another student to create an alias in my name.

I agree not to load any programs including, but not limited to, screen savers, media players, communication tools and games onto the network or computers. I will not use my network folder to store non-educational data files including, but not limited to, music, graphics, pictures, sounds or video materials.

I agree to log out of the network when I am finished using a computer.

I understand that use of a personal phone at school, in any capacity, without the express permission of a teacher or administrator, will result in the confiscation of the phone and other disciplinary actions as deemed appropriate by school administrators.

Internet Use Policy
St. George's Internet access has been established for limited educational purposes which must be in support of education and research, and must be consistent with the Goals and Ethics of St. George’s Episcopal School. Resources used for research must be valid, formally recognized sites. St. George’s has the right to place reasonable restrictions on the material students access or post through the system.

Users agree to the following:

I understand that transmission of any material in violation of U.S. or state law is prohibited, including but not limited to: copyrighted material (including music and videos); threatening, harassing, pornographic or obscene material, or any material protected by trade secret.

I will respect the rights of copyright owners. Copyright infringement occurs when a work is used or reproduced without permission of the copyright holder. I will seek permission from the owner and/or ask a teacher/librarian for help if I am unsure. I will not facilitate unlicensed copyrighted software or files of any kind from entering or exiting the school via the Internet, removable storage or any other method.

I understand that material obtained through research on the Internet and then used in academic work for St. George’s is to be properly cited following guidelines provided by teachers and librarians.

I will not plagiarize works that I may find on the Internet. (Plagiarism is defined by Black’s Law Dictionary as the act of appropriating the literary composition of another, or parts or passages of his writings, or the ideas of the same, and passing them off as the product of one’s own mind.)

I will not use St. George's Internet access for personal financial or commercial gain, product advertisement, political lobbying, or the sending of unsolicited junk mail, or chain letters.

I will not attempt to gain unauthorized access to St. George's network or any other computer system found on the Internet, nor will I attempt to go beyond my authorized access in any way. I will not attempt to access (hack) another person's account or access another person's files without their consent. These actions are illegal.

I will keep all objectionable language, material, inappropriate text files, files that advocate violence or discrimination towards other people, or files dangerous to the integrity of the network from entering or exiting the school via the Internet or e-mail. If I accidentally end up at an inappropriate site I will inform my teacher immediately and explain how I arrived at that site.

I will not participate in cyberbullying.

I will not post to the Internet any representations or any depiction whatsoever of St. George’s School, or persons in any way connected with St. George’s, from any computer on school premises.

I understand that I will still be responsible for all school communications and assignments if I have my network, internet or computer privileges taken away or suspended.

Internet Safety

Students agree to the following:

I WILL NEVER give out my full name, home phone number, street address, or ANY other personal information regarding myself over the Internet. This includes web postings of any kind (ie. webpages, chat rooms, on-line personal diaries).

I WILL NOT agree to meet with anyone whom I met on-line. If such a meeting is educationally founded (i.e. mentor, legislator, author) my parent or teacher must accompany me, and only with parental permission.

I WILL NOT post defamatory remarks and/or pictures about anyone on the Internet.

I understand that my Internet usage can be monitored and tracked while accessing the Internet through St. George's resources and that my access to the Internet may be denied at any time.
