St. George's supports Hurricane Michael recovery efforts

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

When given the opportunity, St. George's families, faculty and staff jumped on the opportunity to help support families in Florida who were recently devastated by Hurricane Michael, as well as volunteers helping with the recovery efforts.

Director of Counseling, Tamara Claverie, and St. George's parent-led service group, DASH (Dragons in Action Serving and Helping), quickly put together a school-wide drive to collect specific items needed for the recovery.

DASH paired with Hogs ResQue and team Fleur de Que after hearing that they would be heading to Florida to provide some much needed supplies and help in the Florida area. The two groups from Hogs for the Cause, the local fundraiser and festival that helps raise funds annually for families impacted by pediatric brain cancer, are no strangers to lending a helping hand, so the St. George's community was eager to do its part to help.

"I was so proud of how quickly the St. George's community was able to come together to make this drive a success," said Mrs. Claverie. "As a school we were able to demonstrate our character trait of compassion by doing our small part to help those in need."

In just two days, the St. George's community filled eight large bins with supplies that were then donated to Hogs ResQue and Fleur de Que volunteers going to Florida. The volunteers set up in Panama City and for two days, fed those impacted by Hurricane Michael as well as first responders in the area.

Special thanks to St. George's parents Krystil Lawton and Victoria Tran for offering their time to assist with the drop-off and pick-up of the donated items.
