St. George's announces Dr. Joseph Kreutziger as Head of School

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

On Monday, December 10, the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Dr. Joseph Kreutziger as the new Head of School at St. George's Episcopal School. Kreutziger, a New Orleans native, is currently the Director of Middle School at Birch Wathen Lennox School, a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade school in New York City.

"On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that we have appointed Dr. Joseph Kreutziger as our next Head of School," said Search Committee Chair and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alex Breckinridge, in a letter to the St. George's community on Monday. "We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kreutziger, his wife Jana, and their two daughters Clara and Ava back home to New Orleans."

Dr. Kreutziger graduated from St. Martin's Episcopal School in New Orleans and then from the University of the South at Sewanee where he received his BA in English. He holds a Masters and Doctorate in English and American Literature from Washington University in St. Louis. Kreutziger started his career in education at St. George's in 1993 where he taught English and Physical Education in Middle School.

"I am at once elated and humbled, honored and thankful to join you this July," said Dr. Kreutziger in his own letter to the St. George's community. "Twenty-five years ago, Rob Eichberger and St. George's took a chance on hiring an untested, unproven college graduate to teach English and physical education. So much has transpired since, but those early years were both formative and transformative."

"It's clear in the here and now, twenty-five years since, that this community's educational vision has only grown more expansive, the scope widened to include not just the additional buildings and enhanced physical spaces but also, improbably, a sharper focus on St. George's distinct mission to serve each individual child academically, creatively, emotionally and spiritually," added Kreutziger.

Dr. Joseph Kreutziger was appointed as the new Head of School after a nation-wide search conducted by the Head of School Search Committee, made up of both current and former parents, as well as members of the faculty.

Kreutziger will officially become the new Head of School on July 1, 2019. He succeeds Interim Head of School, Ralph Wales, and Dr. Robert Eichberger, who retired at the end of the 2017-2018 school year after 35 years as Head of School.
