Athletics at St. George’s Episcopal School consists of a continuum of goals centered on basic skill development and broad exposure to sports clinics in lower school, gradually moving into a balance between competition, excellence and participation in middle school. The athletics program emphasizes solid moral values, sportsmanship and commitment to excellence. Membership on a team comes with the obligation to attend and work hard at practices and to put forth a high degree of effort in game situations. The level of commitment required rightly increases as the level of competition increases. Athletics in middle school emphasizes participation, basic skill development and knowledge of the sport. Whenever possible, we will have several teams representing different levels of competition. An emphasis on sportsmanship begins at the lower school level and continues throughout each progression of involvement.
Middle school sports are competitive. Coaches select the most capable and committed athletes for their teams and play their best athletes to win. However, we don’t play to win at all costs.
Every participant will ultimately fall into one of two categories – starter or role player. The most successful participants take ownership of their success. They accept their role, value hard work and effort at practice and competition, are committed both to the team and excellence, and accept each challenge-disappointment-success as part of the journey.
Participation in athletics is a privilege. The nature of sports often presents unique challenges, and our reactions to those challenges may have an impact upon the privilege of participation. The Athletics Department reserves the right to have the final decision whether an athlete is allowed to participate in interscholastic competition.
Athletics is like life. What one gets out of it is directly related to what one puts in it.
Our door is always open if you have any questions concerning our athletics program. We hope you have a great season.
